BUILD YOUR COMMITTEE INTO A GROUP
The word build is used simply because it implies foundations, and structure. A successful church group will possess both qualities. The foundation of building a church group is the word KOINIA - Fellowship of believers. The fellowship of believers is a group of persons who know, and care about each other. The group is bound together by a common task - - to further the cause of Christ in the world.
Step I. The first step in group building is to be sure the group knows each other. Some time should be given at the beginning of the meeting to let each person in the group tell their name, where they come from, where they work, and give a general introduction of themselves to the group. One way this can be stimulated is by the leader setting the example by giving a self introduction. After the group has gone around the room it would be good to take a few moments for a coffee and cake break. This should give the group time to fellowship on an informal basis. If the group is to be divided into committees it may be helpful to list the committees and allow the members to sign up for the committee on which they would like to serve during the year. The first 45 minutes to an hour of our initial meeting should be spent on laying foundations. This may sound trivial. Yet, it is most important.
STEP II. Share with the group the general goals the church has established for the group. You might want to say a word or two about each one as you present them to the group. Share with the group important dates when major programs will be implemented. Appoint, or allow members of the group to choose the committees on which they would like to serve. Be most careful in selecting subcommittee chairpersons. Choose people who will get the job done, and whenever possible choose those who will work well with you.
The church staff finds persons they feel will work with them. Those persons in turn find persons with whom they can work, and finally we hope all the rest can be persuaded to give us a hand.
Your specific task as chairperson will be to GET THINGS DONE. The worst type of leadership exists when the leader does everything. The best leadership exists when the leader can motivate others to work. Involve everyone possible in your group. Consciously and unconsciously make contact with your people at church on Sunday, or whenever the occasion should arise. A smile, and a congenial attitude coupled with warm acceptance of your committee members will build your group, and insure the success of your program. Good leaders are diplomats. Good leaders know their goals and how they plan to achieve them. We plan to achieve ours by soliciting the help of every person possible on our committees.
