Church Staffing

The senior clergy is responsible for the total oversight of the local church.  Taking care of this responsibility does not mean the clergy person  becomes a dictator.  It means that the clergy is responsible for seeing that the church is managed.  As already noted the clergy should be totally in charge of the spiritual care of the congregation; but should follow the scripture example of the disciples who choose deacons to take care of the other issues of the church ...missions, buildings, education, finances, and other program areas.  When the church gets over 400 members the minister usually needs help.  Consequently staff is required.  All church staff exists as an extension of the pastor.  Treat them as you would be treated.

The church has to protect itself in our day against secular legal entanglement.  Therefore, contracts should be set in place setting out the responsibility of each staff person and how they are related to church and pastor.   The senior pastor should be sure that this is done.  It protects him/her and the church in case they are sued,  and also has clearly defined responsibilities.

Over the years I developed (with leading members of the congregation) Staff Descriptions that met the  legal code, and also the needs of  the church.  I have included them for your study.   You may use these as you will.
