Advent:  Four Sundays

Material taken from booklet:  "Services for the Advent Wreath", by Robert Jarboe; CSS Publishing Company, Inc.

First Sunday in Advent:

Two readers required:

Reader A:
Please turn to the advent litany in your  bulletin:
(Pause until the congregation is ready)
To You, O Lord, we lift up our souls.
We trust in you, O God.
All of God's way are loving and faithful
To those who keep the covenant.

Reader B:  Our scripture for this Sunday of Advent is taken from the book of Jeremiah, the thirty-third chapter, verses fourteen through sixteen.  (Read Jeremiah 33:14-16, preferably the New International Version)

Lighting of the first Advent Candle

Reader A:  We light the first candle to remind us of the hope we have in God's promise of the Messianic Kingdom.
(While Reader A is speaking, Reader B. takes the candle lighting stick and takes fire from the altar candles and lights the first candle)
Reader B:  Let us pray:  O God, our true hope is in You.  We trust your promises for us that your great Kingdom will come.  Amen.  At this point the Introit may be sung again.

Another First Sunday in Advent ceremony

Luke 21:25-36

As the candle is lit read:

We light this candle as a symbol of expectation.  May the light sent from God shine in the darkness to show us the way of salvation.

Congregation sings first verse:  "O come, O come, Emmanuel!"
